Here's a really fun ragtime song composed by one of the clown princes of the Ragtime Era, Charles "Humpy" Humfeld in 1917. Now, Humpy was aptly named: he was big as a whale with a sense of humor to match. This was most evident in the song you are listening to, Who Let the Cows Out?
The sheet music to this song includes full one-measure pauses at strategic points, and in place of the music are simple imperatives: "Make a noise like a cow." or "Oh, you cow!" Just try to listen to this song all the way through without mooing. |
Many Thanks to Engineer Gary P. Johnson & Carlsbad Studio West; Sue Keller and Howard Vigorita from Ragtime Press for their enthusiasm and encouragement; Edward A. Berlin for his book, The King of Ragtime; Dover Publications for its sheet music collection: Classic Piano Rags; Rudi Blesh and Harriet Janis for their book, They All Played Ragtime; Dick Zimmerman for his The Complete Works of Scott Joplin CD Set; and my wife, Jan, for putting up with all my hours at the piano. Many thanks also to Mark Thomas, my Web site host at www.misty.com, to Donna Higgins, my illustrious copy editor, and to the incredible Annette Earling at geekgirl graphics for her creative work on this site.
